We are in the thinking, talking, worrying stages of planting a raised garden. We are trying to decide if we should make one ourselves, buy one of those kits, use our yard or rent a piece of land in the surrounding rural area where we live. It seems so daunting, but I am sure once we decide and get moving it won’t be so hard. Right?  We have so many questions;

  • Can we grow enough to sustain us so we don’t have to supplement from the grocery store? I am thinking probably not and then what’s the point? Isn’t that the point of a garden…to be self-sustaining?
  • Will we have enough over a time or will it be a bounty all at once?
  • Should we buy a freezer to store our loot for future use. Can we do that?

I feel like we/I should take a class on gardening, but I think learning on our own might be the best way to go.

I even thought about getting together with our HOA and creating a community garden. I wonder if everyone would go for it. The benefit to creating the garden with many people would be the wealth of individual experience each homeowner could bring to the project. I would imagine that there are people in my neighborhood who have tended a garden at some point in their lives. I may just bring this up at the HOA meeting this coming weekend. ♥

Do you have a garden? If so, how did you get started? Did it go as planned? Are you happy you did it?
